Japan-Oman Summit Telephone Call
April 14, 2026
On April 14, commencing at 4:00 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone call with H.M. Sultan Haitham bin Tariq bin Taimur Al Said, Sultan of Oman.
- At the outset, Prime Minister TAKAICHI expressed her sympathy regarding the human and material damage in Oman, and expressed her gratitude for Oman’s generous cooperation regarding the protection of Japanese nationals since the outbreak of the situation.
- In addition, Prime Minister TAKAICHI explained Japan’s position that, although the U.S.-Iran talks held last weekend did not reach an agreement, what matters most is that de-escalation, including ensuring the safety of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, is steadily achieved, and that a final agreement is reached promptly through diplomatic means.
- Furthermore, Prime Minister TAKAICHI emphasized that restoring the stabilization of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic chokepoint for global logistics and an international public good, is urgently needed, and that it is essential to ensure the freedom and safety of navigation as soon as possible for all vessels, including those of Japan and other Asian countries.
- In response, Sultan Haitham emphasized the importance of resolving issues through diplomatic means, and stated that Oman would like to continue cooperating with countries including Japan towards the stabilization of the situation, including the safety of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
- The two leaders concurred on continuing close communication.
