Japan-Kuwait Relations

Foreign Minister IWAYA having a meeting with H.H. Sheikh Ahmed Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Prime Minister

On September 1, commencing at 10:35 p.m. local time (4:35 p.m. JST) for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Kuwait, paid a courtesy call on H.H. Sheikh Ahmed Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Prime Minister of the State of Kuwait. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, H.H. the Prime Minister welcomed Minister Iwaya's visit to Kuwait and expressed his hope to further enhance relations between Japan and Kuwait in a wide range of areas. In response, Minister Iwaya referred to the fact that the two countries are friends who have helped each other through historical difficulties, and stated his hope to further strengthen bilateral relations in a wide range of areas, based on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
  2. The two sides exchanged views, focusing on bilateral relations between the two countries in the fields of energy, economy and advanced technology. Minister Iwaya expressed his gratitude for Kuwait's long-standing stable supply of crude oil to Japan and stated his desire to cooperate in the field of clean energy, confirming that the two countries would continue to promote their cooperation.
  3. Minister Iwaya welcomed the progress of cooperation in the fields of electricity and water including the fact that the policy dialogue on electricity and water issues was held in February this year for the first time in five years, and he also confirmed that cooperation between the two countries will continue to be promoted.
  4. Minister Iwaya also welcomed that the ban on import of Japanese beef into Kuwait is expected to be lifted this month, and the two sides confirmed that they will continue to proceed with the necessary procedures.
