Japan-Iran Summit Telephone Call

On April 8, commencing at 4:00 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone call with H.E. Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The overview is as follows:
- At the outset, Prime Minister TAKAICHI reiterated Japan’s position, emphasizing that the de-escalation of the situation is of utmost importance.
- Furthermore, Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that Japan welcomes the recent announcement by both the United States and Iran as a positive development. She also stated that what matters most is that de-escalation, including the safety of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, is steadily achieved, and expressed her hopes for that a final agreement will be reached promptly through diplomatic means.
- In addition, Prime Minister TAKAICHI emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz is a strategic chokepoint for global logistics and an international public good, and urged Iran to ensure the safety of navigation for vessels of all nationals, including those related to Japan.
- Prime Minister TAKAICHI also requested an early resolution to the issue concerning the Japanese national released on bail on April 6.
- In response, President Pezeshkian explained Iran’s positions.
- The two leaders concurred on continuing close communication towards an early de-escalation of the situation.
