Japan-Iran Relations

On April 8, commencing at 4:00 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone call with H.E. Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The overview is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister TAKAICHI reiterated Japan’s position, emphasizing that the de-escalation of the situation is of utmost importance.
  2. Furthermore, Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that Japan welcomes the recent announcement by both the United States and Iran as a positive development. She also stated that what matters most is that de-escalation, including the safety of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, is steadily achieved, and expressed her hopes for that a final agreement will be reached promptly through diplomatic means.
  3. In addition, Prime Minister TAKAICHI emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz is a strategic chokepoint for global logistics and an international public good, and urged Iran to ensure the safety of navigation for vessels of all nationals, including those related to Japan.
  4. Prime Minister TAKAICHI also requested an early resolution to the issue concerning the Japanese national released on bail on April 6.
  5. In response, President Pezeshkian explained Iran’s positions.
  6. The two leaders concurred on continuing close communication towards an early de-escalation of the situation.
