On September 22, commencing at 11:00AM local time (12:00AM JST on September 23) for approximately 35 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, held a Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with H. E. Mr. Sameh SHOUKRY, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt. The overview is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Minister Hayashi expressed his hope to work together with the Government of Egypt toward COP27 which will be held under the Egyptian presidency to further advance international efforts to tackle climate change. Minister Shoukry offers his condolences on the passing of former PM Abe, and Minister Hayashi expressed his gratitude to President El-Sisi for sending a special presidential envoy (Eng. Kamel Elwazer, Minister of Transport) to Japan to attend the state funeral for former Prime Minister Abe at the end of this month.
  2. Minister Hayashi pointed out that Russia's aggression against Ukraine has shaken the very foundation of the international order and created a global food crisis, and the aggression, which is the root cause of the crisis, must be stopped immediately in order to solve the food crisis. In this respect, Minister Hayashi expressed his hope to cooperate with Egypt. Foreign Minister Shoukry expressed that it is necessary to solve the issue politically urgently to stop this international food crisis.
  3. The two Ministers shared the views of importance of maintaining and strengthening the NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty).
  4. The Ministers reviewed the Japan-Egypt-Jordan trilateral consultations on the Middle East, the second DG-level meeting of which was held this month, and welcomed that the participants had constructive discussions.
  5. The Ministers shared the view that the two countries are important partners for each other, and concurred on continued cooperation to further enhance the bilateral relationship between Japan and Egypt.
