Foreign Minister Hayashi meets Mr. Aboul Gheit, Secretary General of the League of Arab States

On September 5th, commencing at 17:00 local time for approximately 50 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs, during his visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary General of the League of Arab States. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Hayashi commended the role played by the League of Arab States and Secretary General Aboul Gheit in addressing various issues that Arab states have been facing, and promoting development and prosperity in the region. He stated his expectation to have an open and candid discussion with Arab counterparts at the third Japan-Arab Political Dialogue. Secretary General Aboul Gheit welcomed Minister Hayashi’s visit following Prime Minister Kishida’s visit in April, and expressed his high appreciation for Japan’s assistance to the Arab world, including through United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Both sides concurred to promote cooperation in the area of economy, culture, people exchange based on the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Government of Japan and the League of Arab States signed in 2013.
  2. Regarding the release of ALPS-treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, Minister Hayashi explained Japan’s position to Secretary General Aboul Gheit, by referring to the IAEA’s assessment in its Comprehensive Report. Secretary General Aboul Gheit expressed his trust in Japan’s action.
