Japan-Uruguay Relations
The 1st Japan-Uruguay Joint Committee and the 3rd Japan-Uruguay Policy Consultation

- On October 5, commencing at 9:00 a.m. (local time; 9:00 p.m. on October 5 JST) for approximately three hours, the first session of the Japan-Uruguay Joint Committee was held in Montevideo, Uruguay. The committee was established based on the decision at the Japan-Uruguay Summit Meeting last October.
The Japanese side was represented by Mr. NOGUCHI Yasushi, Director General of the Latin American and Caribbean Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the Uruguayan side was represented by H.E. Ms. Ana Ines Rocanova, Director General for International Economic Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The committee was also attended by, from Japan, members of the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the Japan Patent Office, JICA, JETRO, and JBIC; and from Uruguay, members of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
In this session, the participants discussed cross-sectoral cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, digital transformation (DX)/5G, green transformation (GX)/decarbonization, and public-private partnership, and confirmed their intention to strengthen bilateral relations further.
- On October 6, commencing at 10:45 a.m. (local time; 10:45 p.m. on October 6 JST) for approximately two hours, the third session of the Japan-Uruguay Policy Consultation was held in Montevideo, Uruguay.
The Japanese side was represented by Mr. NOGUCHI Yasushi, Director General of the Latin American and Caribbean Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the Uruguayan side was represented by H.E. Mr. Nicolas Albertoni, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs.
The two representatives followed up on the progress of cooperation since President Lacalle Pou’s visit to Japan last year, and confirmed their intention to enhance bilateral relations further in areas such as trade and investment relations and people-to-people exchange. They also discussed cooperation in the international arena and exchanged views on regional and international affairs including the situations in Ukraine, East Asia, and Latin America.
