Foreign Minister Hayashi’s meeting with Nikkei people in Paraguay

On May 5, commencing at 5:40 p.m. (local time; 6:40 a.m. on May 6 JST) for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs, who is visiting Asuncion, Paraguay, had a meeting with representatives of the Nikkei (Japanese immigrants and descendants) community, Japanese residents in Paraguay and the President of the Paraguay-Japan Parliamentary Friendship League. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Hayashi expressed his appreciation for efforts of Nikkei people in Paraguayan society to strengthen friendly relations between the two countries. Minister Hayashi stated that Japanese immigrants and Nikkei people have contributed to the development of Paraguay and are held in high esteem and trusted strongly by many Paraguayans. He expressed his respect for the efforts made by Nikkei to date.
  2. In addition, Minister Hayashi stated that the Government of Japan will implement various policies mainly through the "Division for Collaboration with Communities of Japanese Immigrants and Descendants (“Nikkei”) in Latin America," which was newly established in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs last January, so that the government can promote cooperation between Japan and Latin American Nikkei communities further.
  3. The participants welcomed Minister Hayashi's visit to Paraguay and stated that they will continue to contribute to the strengthening of the bilateral relations as a bridge between Japan and Paraguay.
