Japan-Colombia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On September 21, commencing at 4:15 p.m. (local time; 5:15 a.m. on September 22 JST) for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs, who is visiting New York, the United States, to attend the United Nations General Assembly, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Álvaro LEYVA DURÁN, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Colombia. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Hayashi congratulated Minister Leyva on his appointment as Foreign Minister. Minister Leyva expressed his gratitude for it, and also extended his condolences on the passing of former Prime Minister Abe.
  2. Minister Hayashi stated that Japan is promoting efforts to realize a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)" and would like to work together with Colombia as an important partner with which Japan shares fundamental values. The two Ministers shared the view to deepen cooperation amid an unstable international order, given the growing importance of upholding the rule of law.
  3. The two Ministers reaffirmed cooperation on various international issues. They also exchanged views on Russia's aggression against Ukraine and regional situations in East Asia including the response to North Korea such as the nuclear and missile issues and the abduction issue. The two Ministers confirmed that they would continue to work together.
