Foreign Minister KAMIKAWA’s Luncheon Meeting with Japanese Nationals Residing in Panama and Representatives of Japanese Companies in Panama

On February 23, commencing at 12:30 p.m. (local time; February 24, 2:30 a.m. JST) for approximately 105 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting the Republic of Panama, held a luncheon meeting with Japanese nationals residing in Panama and representatives of Japanese companies in Panama.
- Minister Kamikawa stated that Panama is an important partner of Japan who shares values and principles, and that the current friendship between the two countries is the result of efforts made by many different stakeholders, such as those in the maritime and trade fields.
- Minister Kamikawa also stated that this visit would be an opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations on the occasion of the 120th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and the Republic of Panama, and to enhance cooperation in areas such as the ocean and women’s issues, where both countries are focusing their efforts. Minister Kamikawa expressed her appreciation for the contributions of Japanese nationals residing in Panama and the Japanese companies operating in Panama on the development of bilateral relations through their participation in commemorative projects for the 120th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and the Republic of Panama.
- Minister Kamikawa held a candid exchange of views with the participants on the current situation and prospects of the Panamanian economy, including business in Latin America and the Caribbean, the possibilities and challenges of economic cooperation between Japan and Panama on enhancement of the Panama Canal through DX (Digital Transformation) and other measures, decarbonization of the canal and ports, Panama's role as a hub function for Central America and the Caribbean, among others, and education.
