FOCUS ON POSTWAR JAPAN
50 Years of Challenge
[38 min., English, French, Spanish]
A half-century has now passed since Japan began its climb from the ashes of war to affluence. This timely, introspective program traces the country's remarkable postwar journey through the eyes of a journalist who was present for it all, from the post-war era and the new constitution through to its amazing economic development and growing role among the international community.
The program follows not only the tangible changes in Japan over this period, but also the evolution in thinking that has accompanied material success. What motivated the Japanese in their drive to prosperity, and what will be their priorities and aspirations for the future?
The aftermath of the war.
Demand from American military procurement during the Korean War of 1950-53 helped spur economic recovery. Shown is a textile plant.

Soichiro Honda, founder of Honda Motor Co., pioneered technological advances to motor vehicles, and along with contemporaries such as Masaru Ibuka of Sony Corp. helped build the reputation of Japanese goods.
Japan is a world leader in many high-tech areas. Here, integrated circuits (ICs) are being produced.
Moving forward with a new generation.
