THEIR MAJESTIES THE EMPEROR AND EMPRESS OF JAPAN
[21 min., English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Arabic]
The first Emperor to be enthroned in Japan's postwar era assumed the title in 1989. Since then, he and the Empress have represented Japan to the world, most visibly by both paying and receiving a number of state visits. Important though they are, state visits are just one of an array of Imperial ceremonial duties, which include appointing the Prime Minister, attending official events and granting audiences to representatives of the people. It is a life of pomp and pageantry, to be sure, yet the Emperor and Empress have a more accessible side as well. This highly informative program goes beyond official duties to introduce the family, hobbies and interests of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan.
