On June 10, Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru (Chief of the SDGs Promotion Headquarters) held the 16th meeting of the SDGs Promotion Headquarters at the Prime Minister's Office, with the attendance of Chief Cabinet Secretary HAYASHI Yoshimasa (Deputy Chief of the Headquarters), Minister for Foreign Affairs IWAYA Takeshi (Deputy Chief of the Headquarters), and other Cabinet Ministers.

  1. This year, Japan is conducting its third Voluntary National Review (VNR) on the SDGs for the first time in four years. At this meeting, the Headquarters decided on a report summarizing Japan's efforts toward achieving the SDGs.
  2. During the meeting, 18 Cabinet Ministers, including, Chief Cabinet Secretary HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs IWAYA Takeshi, Minister of Environment ASAO Keiichiro, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology ABE Toshiko, Minister of State SAKAI Manabu, Minister of Justice SUZUKI Keisuke, Minister of State ITO Yoshitaka, State Minister of Cabinet Office TSUJI Kiyoto, State Minister for Digital Transformation HOSAKA Yasushi, State Minister of Finance YOKOYAMA Shinichi, State Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare NIKI Hirobumi, State Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism FURUKAWA Yasushi, State Minister of Defense HONDA Taro, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Cabinet Office NISHINO Daisuke, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Reconstruction IMAI Eriko, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications KAWASAKI Hideto, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries YAMAMOTO Sachiko, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry TAKEUCHI Shinji, made statements about their respective efforts and future plans towards achieving the SDGs.
  3. At the end of the meeting, Prime Minister ISHIBA made the following statement, instructing the relevant ministers to further accelerate efforts towards achieving a society that "leaves no one behind" in light of the efforts and challenges outlined in the Voluntary National Review report:
    1. The international community faces significant challenges in achieving the SDGs by 2030 in the face of various complex crises. Amidst these challenges, it is necessary for the international community as a whole, including Japan, to accelerate efforts to achieve the SDGs to realize a world where human dignity, based on the principle of “human security,” is protected.
    2. This report outlines efforts towards addressing social issues such as a declining birthrate and an aging population, regional revitalization, and disaster risk reduction, demonstrating Japan's determination as a country facing these challenges to transform the solutions to societal challenges into engines for growth and build a sustainable economic and social system. Japan remains resolutely committed to advancing our efforts towards achieving the SDGs with steadfast determination.
    3. The ongoing Osaka-Kansai Expo offers a unique opportunity to discover hints to realize a world where the SDGs and well-being are achieved. GREEN EXPO 2027 is also scheduled for two years from now. Japan will use these international events as catalysts to gather the wisdom of people worldwide and strengthen cooperation with the international community to achieve the SDGs.
