Attendance of Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs ERI at the UN High-Level Meeting on AIDS
From June 21 to 23, Ms. ERI Arfiya, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who was visiting the United States (New York), attended the UN High-Level Meeting on AIDS and held meetings with UN officials and others. The overview is as follows:

(2) Attendance at the Human Security Awards Ceremony
Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI attended the “Human Security Awards” ceremony and delivered a speech on behalf of the Government of Japan.

【Human Security Awards】
This initiative was launched by the Co-Chairs of the 'Group of Friends of Human Security' (the Permanent Representatives of Japan, Costa Rica and Senegal to the United Nations). It was established in 2026 with the aim of raising the profile of human security within and outside the United Nations. The awards recognize projects implemented by United Nations agencies around the world that effectively embody the values of human security.
2 Meetings with UN Officials and Others
(1)Meeting with Mr. Mohamed Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific, Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs of the United Nations
On June 22, Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI held a meeting with Mohamed Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific, Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs of the United Nations. Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI mentioned that, in the current international situation where values and principles are being challenged, the TAKAICHI administration has advanced the updated “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP).” Furthermore, they exchanged views on regional situations, including the Middle East, and discussed further cooperation of Japan with the UN for international peace and security.
(2) Meeting with Ms. Catherine Russell, Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)
On June 22, Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI held a meeting with Ms. Catherine Russell, Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI stated that UNICEF has long been an important partner in Japan’s diplomacy and development cooperation, and expressed the desire to further strengthen cooperation with UNICEF. In response, Executive Director Russell expressed her appreciation for Japan’s support to date, and it was confirmed that Japan and UNICEF would continue to work closely together.
(3)Meeting with Ms. Diene Keita, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)
On June 23, Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI held a meeting with Ms. Diene Keita, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI stated that the provision of sexual and reproductive health services implemented by UNFPA is important and Japan would further strengthen its cooperation with UNFPA in the field of Global Health. In response, Executive Director Keita expressed appreciation for the longstanding support from Japan and confirmed that Japan and UNFPA will continue to work closely together.
(4)Meeting with Ms. Rabab FATIMA, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States
On June 23, Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI held a meeting with Ms. Rabab FATIMA, Under Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States. Parliamentary Vice-Minister ERI mentioned that Japan has announcedthe updated FOIP in light of the changes the world is undergoing. Furthermore, they exchanged views on cooperation with the UN in various fields, such as Climate Change and Peacebuilding towards the development of LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS, and reaffirmed their cooperation.
