Prime Minister TAKAICHI's Attendance at the Island States Ocean Summit (Summary)

On June 3rd, Prime Minister TAKAICHI attended as a guest of honor at the Island States Ocean Summit held in Tokyo, in the presence of His Majesty the Emperor.
- At the opening of the summit, following the host's address by Mr. Sasakawa Yohei, Honorary Chairman of the Nippon Foundation, and the remarks delivered by His Majesty the Emperor, Prime Minister Takaichi delivered her address.
- Prime Minister Takaichi stated that this summit is a meaningful opportunity for leaders of island nations around the world, including Japan, to discuss common marine challenges such as conservation and sustainable use of the oceans and sea level rise and extreme weather events caused by climate change, and expressed her gratitude to the efforts of those involved, including the host, Honorary Chairman Sasakawa of the Nippon Foundation, and H.E. Mr. Surangel S. Whipps, Jr., President of Palau, who serves as co-chair of the summit.
- Prime Minister Takaichi also stated that Japan has been strongly committed to international cooperation in the maritime field and measures against climate change over many years, and expressed her desire to work together toward strengthening the autonomy and resilience of countries in the region under the Updated "Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)" announced last month.
- Furthermore, Prime Minister Takaichi stated that Japan will continue to support countries and regions suffering from extreme weather events and sea level rise, as well as engage in cooperation toward enhancing Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) and maritime law enforcement agencies, and expressed her wish to work with other nations to achieve sustainable oceans based on the rule of law. She also expressed her hope that this summit would serve as a catalyst for uniting the strength of island nations and creating new momentum in the international community.
- The summit was attended by more than approximately 300 participants from about 30 countries, and in addition to the above, H.R.H Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway and President Whipps of Palau delivered remarks.
