Statement by Ambassador SUGIURA Masatoshi, Director-General for Global Issues on Sea-level Rise High-level Meeting
On September 24th at 5:45pm local time (on 25th at 6:45am in Japan), Ambassador SUGIURA Masatoshi, Director-General for Global Issues attended the High-level Meeting on addressing the existential threats posed by sea level rise and delivered a statement during his visit to New York for the 81st United Nations General Assembly. It is the second time that the UN General Assembly held a high-level meeting to address the issue of sea level rise caused by climate change.
In the statement, Director-General Sugiura referred to the Island States Ocean Summit held in Tokyo this past June. Additionally, he presented Japan’s position on the resposne to the threat posed by sea level rise and shared Japan’s commitment to supporting countries that are vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change through financial and technical assistance to work together to enhance their resilience and support their energy transition and decarbonization.
