Mr. KISHIDA Fumio’s Visit to Malaysia, as Special Envoy of the Prime Minister

From 3 to 7 May, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, a Member of the House of Representatives, visited the Republic of Indonesia and Malaysia as Special Envoy of the Prime Minister and Supreme Advisor to the Parliamentary Association of Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), with members of the Parliamentary Association of AZEC. The overview of his visit to Malaysia from 5 to 6 May is as follows.

- On 6 May (local time), Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Special Envoy of the Prime Minister, held a meeting with H.E. Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia. Mr. KISHIDA handed over the letter from Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru to Prime Minister Anwar, stated that he established the Parliamentary Association of AZEC in order to further promote cooperation under AZEC, and expressed his determination to develop AZEC hand in hand with Prime Minister Anwar and other countries. In response, Prime Minister Anwar welcomed Mr. KISHIDA and stated that he recognized the importance of AZEC and that he would like to cooperate as 2025 Chair of ASEAN. Furthermore, Mr. KISHIDA mentioned that, as Japan has been traditionally emphasizing, Japan continues its cooperation towards maintaining and strengthening a free and open international order based on the rule of law and the multilateral free trade system. Prime Minister Anwar echoed this sentiment. The two also discussed the impact of U.S. tariff measures and following exchanges of retaliation between the U.S. and China on the world economy and the multilateral free trade system.


- During his stay, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio also held a meeting with Y.A.B. Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah bin Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister cum Energy Transition and Water Transformation of Malaysia and Y.B. Tuan Nik Nazmi bin Nik Ahmad, Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability of Malaysia. Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah expressed his appreciaiton to Mr. KISIHDA for Japan’s cooperation in areas such as energy saving. The two discussed further strengthening cooperation in multiple areas including the maintenance of Sarawak-Malay power grid. Minister Nazmi exchanged views with Mr. KISHIDA on topics such as the acceleration of efforts towards signing a Memorandum of Understanding for the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) and the further acceleration of cooperation in multiple areas including rare earth and circular economy.rare earth and circular economy.

- Additionally, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio exchanged views with Japanese companies operating in Malaysia. He also visited Malaysia Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT).
