 On January 12, commencing at 9:00 a.m. (local time, 11:00 p.m. JST) for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting New York, U.S. to participate in the Open Debate of the UN Security Council (UNSC), held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Kőrösi Csaba, President of the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. Minister Hayashi appreciated President Kőrösi's positive attitude toward the reform of the UNSC and expressed expectations for his leadership. President Kőrösi responded that transformation has been desired from various levels and the importance of reform of the UNSC has been increasing. He further stated that despite the difficulties of the reform, the need of reform would support the Member States. Minister Hayashi stated that Japan would vigorously promote the strengthening of international order based on the rule of law throughout its two-year term on the UNSC. He also stressed the need to strengthen the functions of the UN as a whole to enhance multilateralism, and stated that Japan would also support enhancing the UNGA’s functions. President Kőrösi welcomed Japan's membership on the UNSC and concurred on the importance of strengthening the functions of the UN including the GA.
  2. Additionally, Minister Hayashi and President Kőrösi agreed to further advance cooperation on issues regarding water between the United Nations and Japan.
