High-level Event on United Nations Reform

On the morning of Monday, September 18 (local time; the evening of the same day, Japan time), Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, attended the high-level event on United Nations (UN) reform hosted by the Honorable Donald Trump, President of the United States of America, within the UN headquarters.
- After a commemorative photo of all the participants at the beginning of the event, Ms. Nikki Haley, Permanent Representative of the United States to the UN, gave an opening address.
- Following that, President Trump voiced his support for the efforts to advance the UN reform led by Mr. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the UN, in order to enable the UN to produce results in line with the massive investment it gains from its Member States, and he expressed expectation over a management reform proposal that the Secretary-General will submit to the UN General Assembly. President Trump also called on other Member Statesto support the Secretary-General’s efforts.
- Secretary-General Guterres then expressed the importance of the UN reform and his determination to promote it, and called on all countries to support and cooperate on the management reform proposal that he will submit to the UN General Assembly in fall this year.
- At the end, Permanent Representative Haley read a closing address to wind up the event.
