On January 12, commencing at 2:30 p.m. (local time; January 13, 4:30 a.m. JST) for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting New York, U.S. to participate in the Open Debate of United Nations Security Council (UNSC), held a meeting with the Honorable Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Representative of the United States of America to the UN. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. Minister Hayashi thanked Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield for her participation in the Open Debate on the rule of law. He expressed his intention to work with the United States in the UN and the Security Council. In response, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield concurred with this view and expressed her willingness to work closely with Japan.
  2. They discussed regional situations such as Ukraine and North Korea. They confirmed the importance of the UNSC's concerted action toward North Korea's repeated launches of ballistic missiles.
  3. They also exchanged views on the reform of UNSC, and concurred on the need to enhance their cooperation, from the perspective of the necessity to strengthen the functioning of the UN.
