On May 18, TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, invited H.E. Mr. António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, as well as the heads of UN agencies and other UN officials and hosted a reception at the Prime Minister’s Office.
- Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated in her opening remarks that, as the entire international order is being shaken, it has become more important than ever for countries to unite, rather than being divided, and work together at the United Nations, which is the most inclusive forum for discussion in the world with 193 member states.
- In addition, Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that Japan would continue to be committed to multilateralism, and that UN reform, including the Security Council reform and UN80, was necessary for the UN to confront difficult challenges around the world and fulfill its role, and that Japan would continue to cooperate for the realization of a more effectively functioning UN.
- In addition, Prime Minister TAKAICHI reiterated Japan's determination to continue working with the United Nations, as this year marks the 70th anniversary of Japan’s accession to the UN. She stated that Japan has contributed to the world as a peace-loving nation since the end of the war, upholding democracy, the rule of law, and the principles of the UN Charter, and has walked alongside the UN while emphasizing the concept of human security.
