The G7 Foreign Minister’s Meeting

On September 21, commencing at 7:10 p.m. local time (September 22 at 8:10 a.m. Japan time), for approximately 60 minutes, H.E. Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting New York, the U.S. to attend the United Nations General Assembly, participated in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. After the meeting, G7 Foreign Ministers’ Statement on Bab al-Mandab and Navigational Rights and Freedoms was released.
- In the meeting, the G7 ministers discussed regional situations, including in Ukraine, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific.
- (1) Regarding the situation in Ukraine, the G7 ministers, together with H.E. Mr. Andrii SYBIHA, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, discussed further coordination among G7 to realize a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and to ensure Ukraine’s grain export through the Black Sea. Minister MOTEGI explained Japan’s support for Ukraine, and emphasized that, as observed in the military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, the security of the Euro-Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific is inseparable.
(2) Regarding the situation in the Indo-Pacific, Minister MOTEGI mainly explained Japan’s position on recent developments concerning China. Minister MOTEGI also welcomed the participation of G7 countries in the “Alert to Countries, Companies, and Other Entities Regarding North Korean IT Workers” issued in July of this year, and emphasized the importance of the complete denuclearization of North Korea. In addition, Minister MOTEGI expressed his appreciation for understanding and cooperation from the other G7 members for the immediate resolution of the abductions issue. - The G7 ministers concurred on continuing close communication and coordination among G7.
