On June 15, commencing at 8:00 p.m. local time (3:00 a.m. on June 16th, Japan time) for approximately 105 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, attended the G7 Evian Summit working dinner session “Working together to address major international challenges.”

  1. During this session, G7 leaders held a candid exchange of views on major international challenges, including the situation in the Middle East, Ukraine, and the Indo-Pacific, as well as enhancing supply chain resilience including for critical minerals.
  2. Prime Minister TAKAICHI welcomed the agreement of a Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran as a major step toward de-escalation of the situation. She expressed her respect for the United States’ persistent diplomatic efforts and stated that, through the implementation of this agreement, it is important that free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is actually ensured and that a final agreement is reached as soon as possible to ensure the prevention of nuclear weapons development by Iran. Furthermore, the Prime Minister stated that the earliest possible passage through the Strait of Hormuz for all vessels currently stranded inside the Persian Gulf should be treated as the highest priority in order to protect the lives and mental well-being of the crews. She also stated that, as the only country to have suffered atomic bombings in war, Japan calls for preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons in coordination with the IAEA, and that Japan would like to coordinate with the G7 on this issue. Referring to the recent Hormuz crisis, she noted that it had demonstrated the importance of stockpiling critical supplies and proposed a “Joint Stockpiling Cooperation Initiative” for critical minerals including support for the establishment of stockpiling systems in G7 countries and mutual cooperation among these systems.
  3. Prime Minister TAKAICHI emphasized the importance of accelerating G7 cooperation to strengthen supply chain resilience, particularly for critical minerals. She highlighted the importance of accelerating the diversification of supply sources with like-minded countries, by citing the start of alternative rare earth supply sources in cooperation with France and Australia and supporting mineral-rich countries through Multilateral Development Banks.
  4. Prime Minister TAKAICHI also stressed the importance of the principle of the complete denuclearization of North Korea. She expressed concern over various issues related to North Korea including its nuclear and missile development and military buildup, as well as cryptocurrency theft. She also expressed her appreciation for G7’s full support for the immediate resolution of the abductions issue.
  5. Prime Minister TAKAICHI explained Japan’s views and position regarding the situation in the Indo-Pacific and various challenges in the region, including those related to China, which have a significant impact on international peace, stability, and prosperity. The G7 leaders concurred on working together in addressing these challenges.
