The G7 Foreign Minister’s Meeting

On June 25, during his visit to the Hague in the Kingdom of Netherlands to attend the events related to NATO summit meeting, Mr. Iwaya Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, attended the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting for approximately 70 minutes from 8:00 a.m. (local time). The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- In the meeting, following the discussions among leaders at the G7 Kananaskis Summit, the ministers discussed the escalating tensions in the Middle East as well as the situation in the Indo-Pacific.
- On the situation in the Middle East, Minister Iwaya stated the importance of fully securing a lasting ceasefire between Iran and Israel and restarting dialogue, and expressed appreciation for the various diplomatic efforts made by the United States and others. Minister Iwaya then stated that Japan will continue to make all necessary diplomatic efforts in cooperation with the international community including the G7 members. Regarding the situation in Gaza, Minister Iwaya stated its importance of all parties returning to negotiations and to sincerely working towards a lasting ceasefire.
- The G7 Ministers also engaged in a candid exchange of views on the Indo-Pacific situation and related challenges including China, and North Korea’s nuclear and missile issues as well as the cryptocurrency theft, which is suspected to be one of its funding sources. Minister Iwaya asked anew for understanding and cooperation from the other G7 members for the immediate resolution of the abductions issue and gained their support.
- The ministers decided that they would continue their close communication and coordination.
