The G7 Foreign Minister’s Meeting

On February 14, commencing at 11:00 a.m. local time (7:00 p.m. on February 14, Japan time) for approximately 110 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, attended the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, during his visit to Munich to attend the Munich Security Conference. The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- In the meeting, the ministers discussed the situation in Ukraine, international partnerships, and regional situations including the Indo-Pacific.
- (1) Regarding the situation in Ukraine, the ministers, together with H.E. Mr. Andrii SYBIHA, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, discussed further strengthening G7 coordination toward the realization of a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. Minister MOTEGI explained Japan’s support for Ukraine, including in the energy sector.
(2) As for international partnerships, H.E. Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of India joined the discussion on issues regarding global governance and cross-cutting threats including maritime security, the Ministers reaffirmed the importance of the G7 working closely with partners, including the countries of the Global South. On global governance, Minister MOTEGI reiterated the importance of reforming the United Nations Security Council, and on maritime security, he explained Japan’s initiatives under the Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) while emphasizing the importance of cooperation among like-minded countries.
(3) Regarding regional situations, the G7 ministers held discussions across a wide range of areas, including the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Africa, and confirmed the importance of responding in close coordination among the G7 in each of these situations. Regarding the situation in the Indo-Pacific, Minister MOTEGI explained Japan’s position on recent developments. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation with like-minded countries to enhance the resilience of global supply chains, including those for critical minerals and rare earths. In addition, Minister MOTEGI emphasized the importance of the complete denuclearization of North Korea, and asked for the continued understanding and cooperation from the other G7 members for the immediate resolution of the abductions issue. - The ministers agreed to continue close communication and coordination going forward.
