Keynote address at “”Arctic-Pacific Security Dialogue 2026,” hosted by the Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies” (April 14)
  1. Ambassador TAKAHASHI Katsuhiko, Ambassador for Arctic Affairs, attended the Arctic Encounter Summit 2026, held in Anchorage, the United States, from April 15th to 17th.
  2. During the session titled “Why the Arctic Cannot Wait: Four Nations on Engagement and the Urgency of the North,” Ambassador Takahashi took the stage with participants from Germany, Italy, and Austria and introduced Japan’s efforts to address various Arctic challenges, including climate change, and emphasized that Japan, with its strengths in science and technology, will continue to contribute in this area by cooperating with relevant countries, including the Arctic states. Ambassador Takahashi also stressed the importance of paying close attention to the situation in the Arctic from geopolitical perspective, while deepening cooperation with like-minded nations and establishing a free and open maritime order in the Arctic based on the rule of law. This perspective garnered support from the participants.
  3. Ambassador Takahashi also exchanged views with government officials, including ambassadors in charge of Arctic affairs from participating countries to this Summit, and reaffirmed the need to continue close coordination. Ambassador Takahashi called for promoting further cooperation in the scientific field, including collaboration through utilizing the “Mirai II,” which is scheduled to enter in service this year.
  4. The summit was attended by various stakeholders from Arctic and non-Arctic states, including representatives from the U.S government, the business sector, indigenous peoples’ organizations, and the Senior Arctic Officials (SAO) of the Arctic Council. Discussions covered various fields such as recent developments in the Arctic, the importance of indigenous peoples, environment, maritime transport, science and technology, and resource exploration.
  5. In addition, Ambassador Takahashi delivered a keynote address at the “Arctic-Pacific Security Dialogue 2026,” hosted by the Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies, where he emphasized the importance of the rule of law for peace and order in the Arctic.
