December 11, 2025
- On 10th December 2025, the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) Information Sharing Centre (ISC), organized a Virtual Capacity Building Executive Programme (VCBEP) for senior officers of maritime law enforcement agencies and related agencies of the ReCAAP Contracting Parties.
- At this 8th program, the ReCAAP-ISC explained the situation of incidents in Asian waters. From the government of Japan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japan Coast Guard participated in the programme, and the Director of Space and Maritime Security Policy Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, explained Japan’s maritime security policy, its efforts for combatting piracy and armed robbery against ships, and Japan’s cooperation with littoral states in the field of maritime law enforcement, and shared expertise and practices with the participating countries.
- Japan played a leading role in establishing ReCAAP to address piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia and, as a major donor, has been continuously contributing to the ReCAAP ISC’s projects to enhance the capacity of the littoral states. Owing to the efforts of the ISC and littoral states, the recent number of incidents in Asia has become low compared to that at its peak. However, robbery and other incidents and in the straits including the Singapore Strait continue to be of concern. Against this backdrop, Japan appreciates the ReCAAP ISC’s contribution to the safety of Asian seas and continues to play a leading role in fighting against piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia, while utilizing the framework of ReCAAP and cooperating with relevant countries.
