On August 30-31, the Preparatory meeting of the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial was co-hosted by Japan and Pakistan in Islamabad, and for this meeting Mr. YAMADA Kenji, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, delivered a video message. This meeting was held under the theme of "safety and security of peacekeepers", as one of the thematic preparatory meetings prior to the Peacekeeping Ministerial to be held in Ghana this December and was attended by over 70 participants from Member States and the UN Secretariat.
- State Minister Yamada pointed out that, as the international situation becomes more severe and complex, Peacekeeping Operations are an important policy tool for maintaining peace and stability in host countries and surrounding countries of the region, and stated that it is necessary to take measures against new threats such as improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and dis/mis-information and to ensure "safety and security of peacekeepers", which is the theme of the meeting.
- State Minister Yamada also noted that Japan has promoted capacity-building support for peacekeepers as the flag-bearer of the UN Triangular Partnership Programme (TPP), and that Japan is supporting the Telemedicine Projects, countermeasures against IEDs and mis/dis-information, and the UN Peacekeeping Intelligence Academy as initiatives to contribute to the safety and security of peacekeepers, and stated that Japan will continue its efforts to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Peacekeeping Operations.
