Japan-Italy Relations

  1. On June 12, following the passing of Hon. Senator Silvio Berlusconi on the same day, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, issued a letter of condolence to H.E. Ms. Giorgia Meloni, President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic.

    In the letter, Prime Minister KISHIDA stated that he is deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Senator Berlusconi and he extended his heartfelt condolences to the Italian Republic and the Italian people on behalf of the Government and people of Japan.

    Prime Minister Kishida also expressed his sincere respect for the Senator’s efforts to develop relations between Japan and Italy, touching upon the carrier of the Senator, who served as President of the Council of Ministers for four times and attended the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit during his mandate, as well as the support he offered following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.
  2. On the same day, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, issued a letter of condolence to H.E. Mr. Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic.

    In the letter, Foreign Minister HAYASHI expressed his sincere condolences to the Italian Republic and the Italian people on the news of the passing of Senator Berlusconi and wished that Minister Tajani, who has worked with the Senator for many years in his political life, and the bereaved family of the Senator will overcome this sadness as soon as possible. Minister Hayashi expressed his respect for the Senator's great contribution to solving the challenges of the international community through initiatives at the Summits and others.
