The state of Japan-UK Foreign Ministers' Meeting

On February 19, commencing at 1:45 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes (local time; 9:45 p.m. on February 19, Japan time), Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with the Rt Hon Elizabeth Truss MP, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, Minister for Women and Equalities of the United Kingdom, during his visit to Germany to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. The two ministers affirmed their consistent support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity while monitoring the situation around Ukraine with grave concern, and they confirmed that they would not accept any unilateral change in the status quo by force, and continue diplomatic efforts for de-escalation and continually work closely together.
  2. The two ministers affirmed that they would deepen Japan-UK cooperation in a wide range of areas including security and defence, economy and economic security.
  3. In addition, Minister Hayashi called for progress in the process toward the lifting of the UK’s import measures on Japanese food regarding radionuclides. In response, Secretary Truss explained that the progress was being made.
