Japan-United Kingdom Relations

1. On July 14, (July 13 in local time), following the appointment of the Rt Hon Theresa May, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, sent a congratulatory letter to Prime Minister May on the same day.

2. In the letter, Prime Minister Abe extended his congratulations on Prime Minister May’s appointment, and expressed his intention to work closely with Prime Minister May to further deepen the close relationship between Japan and the UK. In addition, Prime Minister Abe recalled that Japan and the UK were dynamic strategic partners that share universal values, and explained that he hoped to actively contribute to global economic growth and to the rules-based peace and prosperity in the international community including Asia, together with Prime Minister May.
