Japan-United Kingdom Relations

On December 15, commencing at 5:00 p.m. for approximately 10 minutes, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a Japan-U.K. Summit Telephone Talk with the Rt Hon David Cameron MP, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The overview is as follows.

1. At the beginning, Prime Minister Cameron extended his congratulations on the ruling parties’ victory in the general election of the House of Representatives, saying he is pleased that Prime Minister Abe’s economic policies won the confidence, and is looking forward to continuing to work with Prime Minister Abe. In response, Prime Minister Abe thanked Prime Minister Cameron for his congratulatory telephone call, and explained that this was an election that sought voters’ confidence in economic policies. He also expressed his intention to pursue further growth strategy and to actively promote the Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).

2. Both leaders confirmed they will promote the Japan-EU EPA negotiations, further advance economic and trade relations between Japan and the U.K., and cooperate in the security and defense fields. They also shared the view that they will work together to ensure the success of a visit of His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge to Japan scheduled at the end of February next year.
