Japan-France Summit Telephone Talk

On June 1, commencing at 8:03 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida once again congratulated President Macron on his re-election. He stated that the bilateral cooperation between Japan and France as exceptional partners is extremely important and he hopes to continue their close coordination in dealing with the situation of Ukraine and in achieving a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” in order to safeguard the international order based on the rule of law. In response, President Macron expressed his gratitude and stated that he attaches great importance to the relations with Japan and hopes to deepen cooperation with Japan in a wide variety of fields including security and economy.
- The two leaders confirmed, in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the importance of close collaboration of G7 on sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine. They also shared the understanding that they would cooperate to support vulnerable countries facing the challenges in food security and energy. Prime Minister Kishida explained that he is actively engaged in outreach to leaders of Asian countries. President Macron highly appreciated Japan’s clear position on Ukraine, its support for Ukraine and the efforts of Prime Minister Kishida.
- The two leaders also confirmed that they would continue to work closely together on regional issues in East Asia including North Korea as well as in Africa.
