Japan-France Relations

On April 16, commencing at 3:35 p.m. for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic. The overview of the talk is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister ISHIBA stated that the security of the Euro-Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific is becoming increasingly inseparable, and that he would like to cooperate with President Macron including in the field of security. President Macron replied that he would like to continue developing the positive bilateral relationship between Japan and France such as in the areas of economic security, civil nuclear energy, and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, further as an “Exceptional Partner”.
  2. The two leaders discussed a wide range of economic issues in detail, taking into account the impact of the U.S. tariff measures and China's retaliatory measures against them on the global economy and the multilateral trade system.
  3. The two leaders affirmed that it is in the common interest of Japan and France to maintain and strengthen a free and open international order based on the rule of law, and that Japan and France will work closely together on various issues in the international community, such as the situation in Ukraine and East Asia including the policies towards North Korea.
