Japan-France Summit Telephone Talk
March 1, 2022
On March 1, commencing at 6:55 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- The two leaders shared the understanding that Russia's aggression against Ukraine is a unilateral change in the status quo by force, which shakes the entire international order, not only in Europe but also in East Asia, referring to the discussion on the summit conference on the situation in Ukraine on the previous day. They severely condemned Russia and confirmed that strong sanctions must be imposed.
- Prime Minister Kishida stated that as Japan is the only country that has suffered from atomic bombings, and as the prime minister hailing from Hiroshima, neither the threat nor the use of nuclear weapons should be tolerated, and shared the view with President Macron.
- The two leaders exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine and the future prospects, and confirmed that they would continue to work closely together.
