Japan-Finland Summit Working Dinner

On June 11, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, gave a joint press announcement with H.E. Dr. Alexander Stubb, President of the Republic of Finland, who was visiting Japan. After that, commencing at 7:50 p.m., a working dinner was held for approximately 60 minutes. The overview of the events is as follows. The “Joint statement on Reinforced Cooperation in the Future between Japan and the Republic of Finland” was announced at this occasion.
1. Bilateral Relations
- Prime Minister Ishiba expressed his gratitude to President and Mrs. Stubb for their visit to Hakui City in Ishikawa Prefecture, where Mrs. Stubb has a connection, and for their encouragement to the areas affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, including the donation of Finnish children's picture books. Furthermore, noting that Japan and Finland are strategic partners sharing values and principles, the two leaders shared the view that cooperation between Japan and Finland, both of which are neighboring countries of Russia, is becoming increasingly important as the security of Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions has increasingly become inseparable. The two leaders shared the view that they will expand cooperation in the field of security including defense equipment and technology, such as shelters.
- The two leaders shared the view that they will further strengthen cooperation in areas such as trade, economic security, 5G/6G, supercomputers, quantum computers, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges based on the Joint Statement.
2. Regional Issues
- The two leaders shared the recognition that unilateral attempt to change the status quo by force is unacceptable anywhere in the world and that they would continue to cooperate to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. They also shared their serious concerns over the advancement of the military cooperation between Russia and North Korea.
- The two leaders exchanged views on the situations in East Asia, such as their policies toward North Korea, including on the nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issue, and concurred to work closely together.
- The two leaders shared the view that they will continue to work together on various global challenges.
