Japan-Ukraine Relations

On September 4, commencing at 5:50 p.m., Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, participated in the “Virtual Leaders Meeting of the Coalition of the Willing on Ukraine”, which was hosted by the Governments of the United Kingdom and France. The key points made are as follows:

  1. Prime Minister ISHIBA emphasized that it is extremely important for the United States, Ukraine, and other countries to be united in confronting Russia throughout a series of meetings in August. He also stated that it is regrettable that Russia continues to engage in actions contrary to peace, such as its ongoing intense attacks causing damage to each facility of EU and UK in Kyiv. Prime Minister ISHIBA further stressed that the security of Europe and East Asia are inseparable.
  2. In addition, Prime Minister ISHIBA stated that now is precisely the time for like-minded countries to stand united together and focus their efforts on drawing a constructive response from Russia. Regarding international cooperation on security guarantees for Ukraine, he stated that Japan would continue to support the recovery and reconstruction in Ukraine through a public-private partnership to ensure its social and economic resilience.
  3. Furthermore, Prime Minister ISHIBA stated his intention to proactively participate in the discussions and play an appropriate role, with an aim of moving closer to achieving the two goals of an early ceasefire and a just and lasting peace.
  4. At the meeting, participants exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine, and concurred on continuing to work in close coordination towards the realization of a just and lasting peace.
