Japan-Russia Relations

On February 17, commencing at 9:32 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Putin, Vladimir Vladimirovich, President of the Russian Federation, on the situation around Ukraine. The overview of the talk is as follows.

  1. Prime Minister Kishida told President Putin that Japan is monitoring the situation around Ukraine with grave concern, and that a solution acceptable to the countries concerned should be pursued through diplomatic negotiations, rather than an unilateral change of the status quo by force.
  2. In response to President Putin's explanation of Russia's position, Prime Minister Kishida re-emphasized the necessity of resolving the issue through diplomatic efforts.
  3. The two leaders shared the view to continue dialogue on Japan-Russia relations including a peace treaty and on regional and international situations including Ukraine in which both countries share common interests.
