Japan-Russia Summit Telephone Talk

On February 17, commencing at 9:32 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Putin, Vladimir Vladimirovich, President of the Russian Federation, on the situation around Ukraine. The overview of the talk is as follows.
- Prime Minister Kishida told President Putin that Japan is monitoring the situation around Ukraine with grave concern, and that a solution acceptable to the countries concerned should be pursued through diplomatic negotiations, rather than an unilateral change of the status quo by force.
- In response to President Putin's explanation of Russia's position, Prime Minister Kishida re-emphasized the necessity of resolving the issue through diplomatic efforts.
- The two leaders shared the view to continue dialogue on Japan-Russia relations including a peace treaty and on regional and international situations including Ukraine in which both countries share common interests.
