Japan-Germany Summit Telephone Meeting
March 5, 2026
On March 5, commencing at 5:00 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone meeting with H.E. Mr. Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. The overview is as follows:
- At the outset, Chancellor Merz explained Germany’s position on the regional and international situations, taking into account his recent overseas visits.
- Prime Minister TAKAICHI explained Japan’s position regarding the situation in the Middle East, noting that Iranian attacks have targeted diplomatic facilities as well as civilian facilities including energy facilities, resulting in civilian casualties, and that Japan condemns Iran’s such actions. Chancellor Merz in turn explained Germany’s position and efforts on the matter. The two leaders concurred on closely working together toward the early settlement of the situation.
- The two leaders shared concerns about the impact of export controls on critical minerals and other items on global supply chains and confirmed their cooperation in the field of economic security. They confirmed that Japan and Germany will continue to work closely together to address the challenges facing the international community.
