On February 14, commencing at 3:00 p.m. (11:00 p.m. Japan time) for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Munich, the Federal Republic of Germany to attend the Munich Security Conference, held a meeting with H.E. Dr. Johann Wadephul, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany. The overview is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Foreign Minister Wadephul expressed his welcome for the reunion with Minister MOTEGI. He stated that the importance of deepening cooperation with Japan, a premium partner with which Germany shares values and principles, is increasing in the current international situation, and expressed his personal regard for Japan and his desire to further deepen bilateral cooperation. In response, Minister MOTEGI welcomed Germany’s active engagement in the Indo-Pacific region, noting that this year marks the 10th anniversary since Japan proposed a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” (FOIP). He also stated that he would like to continue to work closely together, noting that further cooperation among like-minded countries is essential, in the field of economic security.
  2. The two foreign ministers concurred that for Japan and Germany, which are nations of industry and technology, building resilient supply chains and maintaining and strengthening a rules-based, free and fair international economic order are of critical importance. They also concurred that they will continue to build up concrete cooperation in coordination with the industrial sector. Furthermore, the two ministers confirmed that they will further strengthen the security foundation of both countries, based on the progress in bilateral security cooperation to date.
  3. The two ministers frankly exchanged views on the situation in East Asia, their policies toward North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues, and the abductions issue, as well as the situation in Ukraine. The two ministers confirmed that Japan and Germany will work closely together to address the challenges facing the international community.
