Japan-EU Relations

On October 29, commencing at 6:00 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, held a telephone meeting with H. E. Dr. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, President von der Leyen extended her congratulations to Prime Minister TAKAICHI on her appointment.
  2. Prime Minister TAKAICHI conveyed to President von der Leyen that Japan and the EU are important strategic partners in maintaining and strengthening a free and open international order based on the rule of law and in addressing global challenges together and that she looks forward to working closely with the President in addressing various issues.
  3. Both leaders concurred on further deepening cooperation in a wide range of areas, including security, economic security, and industrial competitiveness, while touching upon the current international situation.
