Japan-EU Relations

October 25, 2023

On October 25, the European Commission hosted the Global Gateway Forum in Brussels, Belgium and Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio was invited the Forum by the President of the European Commission, Dr Ursula von der Leyen. PM Kishida delivered a video message at the Forum. The following is a summary of the message.

  1. On the sidelines of the G7 Hiroshima Summit this year, Japan hosted a side-event on the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII). In order to have the G7 PGII bear fruit and to realise high quality infrastructure investment, the mobilisation of private finance in collaboration with various actors is essential, and we confirmed our commitment to work together. The EU's ‘Global Gateway’ is an initiative to actively mobilise private investment for sustainable development across the world and is making an important contribution to the G7 PGII.
  2. As the world stands at an inflection point in history, Japan and the EU are strategic partners who uphold the free and open international order based on the rule of law and are addressing jointly various challenges facing the international community. Japan will continue to work closely with the EU in this area, based on “the Partnership on Sustainable Connectivity and Quality Infrastructure between Japan and the EU”.
