Japan-EU Relations

On February 15, commencing at 4.33 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a telephone talk with H. E. Dr. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. An overview of the talk is as follows.

  1. The two leaders shared the view that they have monitored the situation around Ukraine with grave concern and consistently supported the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and that they would continue close coordination for de-escalation.
  2. President von der Leyen, touching upon concerns about the shortage of natural gas in Europe, deeply expressed her appreciation for the diversion of LNG shipment to Europe decided by the Government of Japan. In response, Prime Minister Kishida stated that he decided to share the surplus of LNG handled by Japanese corporations with Europe for showing solidarity with allies and like-minded partners who share values, and the two leaders confirmed that they would continue to cooperate to ensure energy security.
  3. President von der Leyen explained the EU Global Gateway initiative. In response, Prime Minister Kishida stated that he appreciated the initiative, and that he would like to continue to work with the EU based on the “Partnership on Sustainable Connectivity and Quality Infrastructure between Japan and the European Union.”
  4. The two leaders shared the view to strengthen and promote Japan-EU cooperation in wide range of areas, looking ahead to the next Japan-EU Summit meeting.
