Japan-EU Relations

 On September 19, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan joined the reception hosted by the European Union (EU) and held a short meeting with Ms. Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission, during his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. North Korea

(1) Minister Kono and High Representative Mogherini strongly condemned North Korea’s launch of the ballistic missile over the territory of Japan on September 15. They also shared the view on the importance of thorough implementation of the all relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the need for further increasing pressure against North Korea from the international community.

(2) High Representative Mogherini expressed solidarity with Japan. She stated that the EU would co-operate with Japan, the United States and the Republic of Korea and the EU would urge countries concerned to rigorously implement the series of relevant Security Council resolutions.

2. Japan-EU security cooperation

Minister Kono and High Representative Mogherini affirmed that Japan and the EU shared common interests on the security of the Asia-Pacific region and confirmed to promote close cooperation to this end.
