On January 7, commencing at 2:00 p.m. local time (same day, 9:00 p.m. JST) for approximately 50 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, during her visit to Ukraine, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Denys SHMYHAL, Prime Minister of Ukraine. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister Shmyhal expressed his condolences for the damage caused by the recent 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake and expressed his gratitude for Japan's contribution as the G7 Presidency. In addition, he stated that he is working toward the Japan-Ukraine Conference for Promotion of Economic Reconstruction and is confident that it will be successful. In response, She referred to Japan's efforts as the G7 Presidency last year and stated that the Japan-Ukraine Conference for Promotion of Economic Reconstruction to be held on February 19, 2024 demonstrates Japan's commitment. She expressed her desire to make the conference successful by involving the private sector in the medium- to long-term reconstruction of Ukraine.
  2. Minister Kamikawa referred to the outcomes of the economic mission to Ukraine in November last year by Mr. TSUJI Kiyoto, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Mr. IWATA Kazuchika, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, with the participation of Japanese companies. She expressed her desire to sign at least 10 cooperative project documents involving the private sector in cooperation with Ukraine at the Japan-Ukraine Conference for Promotion of Economic Reconstruction. Minister Kamikawa stated that she would like to demonstrate Japan’s commitment to the recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine through public-private cooperation, both at home and abroad. The two sides affirmed the progress of bilateral efforts on the recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine.
  3. The two sides also exchanged views on the status of domestic reforms by Ukraine, including anti-corruption efforts, and cooperation between the governments of Japan and Ukraine.
