Japan-Ukraine Relations

On August 29, commencing at approximately 5:45 p.m. for over 20 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a Summit Telephone Talk with H.E. Mr. Volodymyr ZELENSKYY, President of Ukraine. The summary of the talk is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida congratulated the President for the nation's Independence Day on August 24, and expressed his unshakable determination to stand with Ukraine.
  2. Prime Minister Kishida reiterated his strong condemnation of Russia's continued attacks on various parts of the country, including Kyiv. Prime Minister Kishida stated that Japan will continue to make its utmost effort to support Ukraine and explained Japan's assistance for Ukraine including ones through the NATO Trust Fund.
  3. President Zelenskyy renewed his gratitude for Japan's support to Ukraine. In this context, President Zelenskyy briefed Prime Minister Kishida on Ukraine's efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace.
  4. Prime Minister Kishida also shared his view with the President Zelenskyy that, in light of the outcome of this meeting, Japan will continue to reach out to the Global South including countries of the Indo-Pacific region, while demonstrating leadership as G7 Chair. The two leaders reaffirmed their views that they will continue to work closely together.
