Japan-Ukraine Summit Telephone Talk

On June 9, commencing at approximately 3:20 p.m. for around 30 minutes, KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a Summit Telephone Talk with H.E. Mr. Volodymyr ZELENSKYY, President of Ukraine. The summary of the talk is as follows.
- Prime Minister reiterated his sympathy and solidarity for the people of Ukraine regarding the effect of the collapse of the dam at the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant. Prime Minister Kishida went on to state that Russia’s aggression can never be justified as it has victimized many citizens at various parts of Ukraine and caused damage to civilian objects including the power plants, and expressed his strong condemnation of the act. Prime Minister Kishida also stated that Japan plans to immediately provide approximately five million dollars in emergency humanitarian assistance for the residents affected by the flooding through the international organizations. President Zelenskyy expressed his sincere appreciation for all the assistance Japan has provided to date, including what was announced at the meeting.
- Prime Minister Kishida again expressed his appreciation to President Zelenskyy for his in-person participation in the G7 Hiroshima Summit, and stated it could be confirmed that no unilateral attempt to change the status quo by force will be acceptable anywhere in the world, and that it is important to maintain and strengthen the free and open international order based on the rule of law.
- President Zelenskyy reiterated his gratitude for the opportunity to participate in person in the G7 Hiroshima Summit. President Zelenskyy also explained the consequences of the collapse of the dam at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, based on the results of his own visit to Kherson region, as well as the current situation, that Russia continues to launch heavy missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and other cities on a daily basis. Prime Minister Kishida stated that, in light of the outcome of the G7 Hiroshima Summit and this meeting, Japan intends to work closely with Ukraine while demonstrating leadership as G7 Chair.
