Courtesy Call on H.E. Mr. Petro Poroshenko, President of Ukraine, by Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. Fumio Kishida

On Thursday, July 17, commencing at 12:15 p.m. for approximately 45 minutes, Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. Fumio Kishida, who was visiting Ukraine, made a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Petro Poroshenko, President of Ukraine. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- Minister Kishida said that President Poroshenko’s victory in the recent presidential election shows that the people of Ukraine are seeking reform and stability, and the Government of Japan intends to proactively support the reform efforts being vigorously promoted by President Poroshenko. Minister Kishida also said that Japan believes it is important to resolve problems peacefully, and hopes the situation in Eastern Ukraine will be stabilized as quickly as possible through dialogue with Russia and the separatists. In response, President Poroshenko said he wants to strengthen Japan-Ukraine relations further, and expressed gratitude for Japan’s proactive contribution, along with stating that he wants to move the dialogue with Russia solidly forward although doing so will not be easy. He also explained the situation in Eastern Ukraine.
- Minister Kishida said that the Government of Japan considers the followiong three points important: 1) improving the economic situation; 2) restoring democracy; and 3) promoting domestic dialogue and unification, and he explained specific support measures by Japan. In response, President Poroshenko expressed gratitude for Japan’s proactive support for Ukraine’s peace and stability. President Poroshenko also explained the domestic reforms and measures etc., currently being pursued by him, to calm the crisis.
