1. H.E. Mr. Donald Tusk, Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland, was elected as the next President of the European Council at a special European Council meeting on August 31 (August 30 local time).

2. On September 3, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sent Prime Minister Tusk a congratulatory message in which Prime Minister Abe extended his congratulations on Prime Minister Tusk’s election as the next President of the European Council, along with stating that the European Union (EU) and Japan are global partners that share fundamental values such as freedom, democracy, the rule of law and human rights, and that because Japan intends to continue to engage in further strengthening its cooperative relationship with the EU in a wide range of fields, he wants to continue to coordinate closely with Prime Minister Tusk.
