On June 16, commencing at 5:10 p.m. (local time. 8:10 a.m., June 17, Japan time.) for approximately 35 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, who is visiting Kananaskis, Canada, to attend the G7 Summit, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister Ishiba welcomed the realization of the meeting with Chancellor Merz and stated that it is all the more important for the G7 to work together amid the increasingly severe international situation. Chancellor Merz expressed his support and his intention to deepen discussions not only on Japan-Germany bilateral relations but also on cooperation in various fields.
  2. The two leaders discussed a wide range of economic issues including responses to the U.S. tariff measures.
  3. The two leaders also exchanged views on the situation in the Indo-Pacific, such as their policies toward North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues and the abductions issue, as well as on the situation in Ukraine, and confirmed that they would work closely together on various challenges that the international community is faced with.
  4. The two leaders concurred on further strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the fields of security and economic security, and confirmed to continue close communication.
