 On September 21, commencing at 8:45 a.m. (local time) for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, who is visiting New York to attend the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, held his first foreign ministers’ meeting with H.E. Mr. Sigmar Gabriel, Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. North Korea

(1) Minister Kono statedthat it isimportant to exert the maximum pressure on North Korea, and in order to do that it isnecessary to urge the involvement of China and Russia, and increasepressure on North Korea from the international community as a whole.

(2) Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister Gabriel statedthat Germany isencouraging China and Russia, and the European Union (EU) is also taking sanction measures against North Korea.

(3) The two ministers shared the view that they will continue to cooperate closely, including in responses at the UN Security Council (UNSC).

2. Cooperation between Japan and Germany in other fields

The two ministers shared the view that they will cooperate closely in fields such as UNSC reform and disarmament.
